Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 1, 2026
BlocLog ("the App") is designed with your privacy in mind. This policy explains what data the App processes, how it's used, and what controls you have. We've written it in plain language so it's easy to understand.
Information We Process
The App processes climbing data you create — including your sessions, climbs, grades, results, notes, heights, saved gyms and crags, custom grade scales, and settings. This data is generated by your use of the App and is stored on your devices, and in your own iCloud if you turn on iCloud sync or backup.
No account is required to use the App, and the App does not collect personal information such as your name or email address. The developer does not receive any of your data.
Permissions We Request
The App's core features — logging sessions and climbs, the logbook, and progress tracking — work without granting any additional permissions. Certain optional features require specific permissions:
- HealthKit: Required for the optional Apple Health integration. The App asks for access when you start a session with Health recording turned on. You can deny or revoke this permission at any time in the Health app or in Settings → Health → Data Access & Devices.
- Location (While Using): Required only to assign one of your saved gyms or crags to a session automatically, and to set a saved place to your current position. The App reads your approximate position (about 100 meters) once when a session starts, and saves it with that session. It never tracks your location in the background.
- Motion & Fitness: Required for the optional altitude assistance. The barometer and motion sensors are used during a session to measure height climbed and suggest climbs. This data is processed on your device.
How Data Is Used
Your climbing data is used solely to power the App's features: your logbook, statistics, insights, recaps, achievements, and widgets. Data is never used for advertising or profiling, and is never sold to third parties.
On devices that support Apple Intelligence, the App can phrase insight headlines with Apple's on-device language model. This runs entirely on your device.
Data Storage and Retention
Your climbing data is stored locally on your iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch. If you turn on iCloud sync or iCloud Drive backup, a copy is also stored in your private iCloud (see "iCloud Sync and Backup"). Workouts you save to Apple Health are stored by Apple Health (see "HealthKit Information"). Sessions recorded on Apple Watch are sent directly to your paired iPhone, and back. The App does not use its own backend server. There are no third-party analytics or crash-reporting SDKs embedded in the App.
Your data persists on your devices until you choose to delete it. If you uninstall the App, locally stored app data is removed from that device. However, any workouts written to Apple Health are managed separately by Apple Health and remain unless you remove them from Health directly. Data in iCloud (see below) also remains until you delete it.
HealthKit Information
When you enable Apple Health recording, the App writes climbing workouts to Apple Health, with active energy and effort, and reads heart rate, active energy, effort, and workouts to show them in the App. On Apple Watch, it also reads your Activity rings to show them after a workout. The App only reads and writes HealthKit data with your explicit permission.
HealthKit data is never stored in iCloud by the App, and is not included in iCloud sync or iCloud Drive backups. The App does not operate its own backend for HealthKit data. Once workout data is written to Apple Health, Apple may sync or store it across your devices and iCloud according to your Apple Account settings and Apple's own policies.
HealthKit data is never used by the App for advertising or shared with third parties by the App. You can revoke HealthKit access at any time in the Health app or in Settings → Health → Data Access & Devices.
iCloud Sync and Backup
Both features are optional and off until you turn them on in Settings.
- iCloud sync: Your logbook syncs between your devices through your private iCloud database, under your own Apple Account. The developer cannot access it. Synced records include no heart rate, energy, or effort values.
- iCloud Drive backup: The App saves the latest backup plus daily copies for 14 days to the BlocLog folder in your iCloud Drive. Backups include no heart rate, energy, or effort values.
Sharing and Disclosure
The App does not include advertising SDKs or third-party analytics services. The App does not share your climbing data with third parties.
Note that certain Apple system services may process data according to Apple's own terms and privacy policy:
- Apple Maps: When you search for a gym or crag, view a map, or name a location on a share picture, Apple Maps receives the search text or coordinates.
- iCloud, Apple Health, and Watch connectivity are controlled by your device and Apple Account settings, not by the App.
If you share a session or recap picture, or an export file, it goes only where you choose to send it.
If you contact support via email, you voluntarily send the content of that message and any information you choose to include. The App does not collect or transmit diagnostics automatically. Optional sensor recordings for diagnostics, which you can turn on in the Watch settings, are saved only on your devices and are shared only if you share them yourself.
Backups, Export/Import
The App lets you export your logbook as a JSON or CSV file in Settings → Export & import, and import a JSON file on another device to restore it. You can also import sessions exported from another climbing app. Exports include saved session summaries; heart-rate samples read from Health are added to JSON exports only if you turn on that option. These files are created and managed by you — they are not uploaded to any server by the App.
Your data may also be included in device or iCloud backups if you have those enabled. This is managed by iOS and your Apple Account settings, not by the App.
Your Controls
- Delete Sessions: You can delete any session in the logbook. If iCloud sync is on, it is also removed from iCloud.
- Delete iCloud Data: You can delete your logbook from iCloud in Settings → Export & import.
- Delete Health Workouts: Deleting a session in the App does not remove a workout already saved to Apple Health. You can delete it in the Health app.
- Revoke Permissions: HealthKit, Location, and Motion & Fitness permissions can be revoked at any time in Settings.
- Export Data: You can export your full logbook at any time.
- Delete Everything: Uninstalling the App removes all of its data from that device.
